Middlesbrough Historic Quarter – FREE Project site visits – Thursday 27th July

These site visits will involve a chance to see, including from on the scaffold (Zetland Hotel only) conservation and development work being part funded by High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) grants.

Hear from two of Middlesbrough Historic Quarter’s most significant building’s owners and professional teams, about the heritage of The Zetland Hotel and 2-3 Exchange Place and plans for their future use.

Architects from Howarth Litchfield & Partners and Ainsworth Spark Associates will be on hand alongside the building contractors to describe the methods being used to repair the historic fabric of the buildings. Works to various elements will be at different stages, allowing visitors to see how the fabric is prepared, how the works are undertaken, and how completed work looks up close.

Please note –

  • A safety induction will be carried out as part of each site visit.
  • Safety helmets and Hi-Viz jackets will be provided.
  • Participants will be expected to wear their own robust, enclosed footwear.
  • The visit will require participants to be able to climb narrow ladders onto scaffolds (only for The Zetland Hotel visit)
  • Suitable for 16 years and over.

2-3 Exchange Place (former Kalinka) 9.30 – 11am

Having been used as Kalinka vodka bar and before that Uncle Alberts, Vienna and Wicker’s World nightclub from the ‘90s, this is a Grade 2 listed building. Built as terraced offices, c.1870 by W.H. Blessley (Middlesbrough) it was formerly known as Albert Bridge Place.

The Zetland Hotel, 9 Zetland Road, 11.30am-1pm

Built around 1860, The Zetland Hotel is a hidden Victorian gem, with an opulent tiled dining room and original features throughout. A Grade 2 listed building, the inside was restored to something like its original glory by the present owners, Joanne and Philip Christie in 2017-8 where they continue to operate the building as a brasserie and bar.

Come and find out about the next stage of its renovation and the work being done to the building.
