Winterschladen Wine Merchants, pictured on the left of the photographs, was once a name synonymous with Middlesbrough. The building was later the Cornerhouse nightclub. Share your memories of the building below.
I worked at Winterschladen in 1964. In the cellars under Middlesbrough railway station.
We used to decant and label wine there. Also supply weddings and parties with drink and spirits, they were charged on what they used and could send a bottle back half empty.
I used to go to the bond at Dents Wharf with a customs officer to load spirits into the warehouse. I remember a forklift driver dropping a 50gallon cask of rum on the dockside and it bursting open, and all the dockers running with cups to get some. The poor customs man couldn’t do much to stop them. It was a pleasure to work for Winterschladen, a great company.
Hello Tom,
I used to buy from Winterschladens thanks to Terry Coverdale, a lovely man and great friend of the family. Excellent purchases too. Thanks!
