In 1963 Abdillahi Warsama was turned away from a London venue for being black and opened the Bongo as a place where everyone was welcome. Originally the Kenya Café, one of the first places in Middlesbrough to sell curry, it was a favourite with visiting sailors who were unused to the bland British diet.
