‘Middlesbrough Historic Quarter – Exploring the history of our high street’ was created in late 2023 as part of a series of events and heritage tours for Middlesbrough’s High Street Heritage Action Zone with Dr Lucy Jessop – an architectural historian and Senior Architectural Investigator with Historic England.
The heritage walks featured three late 19th-century buildings which have been subject to detailed archival research and investigation by Historic England. The buildings include Exchange House, Zetland Place (the former Post Office); 2-4 Exchange Place; and 7 Zetland Street (Webb House). Each of these buildings is listed and as such is considered of national significance
Dr Lucy Jessop is an architectural historian and Senior Architectural Investigator with Historic England. She is responsible for the historical and architectural research for the regional High Street Heritage Action Zone programme. Lucy has a PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art (University of London) and has a particular interest in architectural patronage and buildings of the 17th to 19th centuries.
A research resource created by Historic England, which complements the film includes guidance on researching the history of a building or place, hints and tips, what to do with your research, useful online sources of information and a list of publications.
