Middlesbrough HSHAZ Heritage Open Days

England’s largest festival of history and culture. Established in 1994, Heritage Open Days is England’s contribution to the European Heritage Days and has since grown into the country’s largest community heritage festival.

Each September thousands of volunteers across the country invite you to experience local history, architecture and culture. All for free.

Heritage Open Day events taking place in Middlesbrough

Queer Flower Arranging Workshop

Friday 9th September, 7pm – 8.30pm at The Masham, 27 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, TS1 1RL.

A free hands-on workshop using flowers that have LGBTQ+ significance, led by Celebrating Hidden Middlesbrough commissioned artist, Ian Giles.

Ian will talk through the stories related to these flowers whilst sharing arranging tips. Then you will create your own table arrangement using the flowers provided to take home.

Teesside Archives Open Day at The Dorman Museum

Saturday 10th September, 11am – 3pm. Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, TS5 6LA

Join Teesside Archives at The Dorman Museum to dive into Middlesbrough High Street Heritage Action Zone through material held in the archives.

Visit the conservation suite and find out about the ways in which the town’s history is being preserved.

Zetland Research Lab with Amy Davies

Saturday 10th September, 11am – 12.30pm at The Masham, 27 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, TS1 1RL.

Join us as part of the Celebrating Hidden Middlesbrough’s Zetland exhibition for this event with Zetland Road Artist in Residence Amy Davies to explore the stories, memories and archival material associated with Zetland Road – a key part of Middlesbrough’s Historic Quarter.

Middlesbrough’s Astounding Iron & Steel Industry

Wednesday 14th September, 10am – 11am and 1pm – 2pm at Commerce House, 1 Exchange Square, Middlesbrough, TS1 1DE

Local historian Dr Joan Heggie will be sharing over 20 years of experience and knowledge of Middlesbrough’s local history and its astounding inventions connected to the iron & steel industry and the Gilchrist-Thomas process.

Conserving Middlesbrough’s Hidden Heritage

Thursday 15th September, 11am – 12 noon at The Masham, 27 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, TS1 1RL.

Heather Nelson, Middlesbrough Council Conservation Officer, will talk about her role in connection with Middlesbrough High Street Heritage Action Zone and conserving the town’s hidden heritage.

Friday 16th September 10am – 11am, at The Masham, 27 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, TS1 1RL.

A talk exploring the history of Middlesbrough Railway Station and interesting stories from the archives from The Middlesbrough History Project. Mercury 3 will also offer an insight into modern railway station developments.
