M&S opened a store here at 45 Linthorpe Road in 1901, a rare example of a store remaining in the same location, despite many changes. Expanded in 1931, it was enlarged further in 1958, over what was Garden Street. Agnes, the wife of the original Mr. Spencer was from Marton.
